What are the differences between granite, marble and quartz countertops?
Both granite and marble are natural stone surfaces, so they are naturally porous and require special sealants. Granite absorbs the least and requires resealing only about once a year. You can cut, roll dough, and place hot pots directly on granite, making it an excellent surface for kitchen counters.
Marble is smooth and cool to the touch, but since it lacks the durability of granite it is used primarily in bathrooms or as an accent in flooring or around fireplaces. Both granite and marble slabs will have a one-of-a-kind look that can be created only in nature.
Quartz surfaces are man-made and equally as hard and durable as granite, also making them ideal for kitchen countertops. A key advantage of quartz is that it is non-porous and requires no sealing.
We recommend that customers select either granite or quartz for their kitchen countertops, depending upon the specific look and color they prefer. Granite, quartz and marble all work equally well in bathrooms.

Can I save money by doing some of the work myself?
Yes! When we provide you with an estimate, we will give you a cost breakdown for every step in the process. For example, some customers choose to remove their old counters or cabinets themselves, or handle their own plumbing. Others prefer to have us handle the entire process from beginning to end. Your final cost will be adjusted according to your specific needs.

What is the best way to care for natural granite countertops?
Granite is a very durable material and will maintain this same beauty with proper care. Use water, soap, or natural stone cleanser to clean your counters. Do not use window cleaner, 409, abrasive cleaners, vinegar water or any alcohol- or acid-based products, as these can etch the granite and damage the integrity of the sealer. Lighter granite colors may show water rings and spots, but these will dry out and disappear. Since granite is a very hard material, second only to diamonds, cutting directly on the granite may dull your knives, so we recommend using a cutting board.

What is my next step?
Kitchens & Stone will gladly come to your home, discuss your needs, measure your kitchen or bathroom, and then provide a free design and estimate with no obligation. Once your color choices are complete, we will use the final estimate to provide you with a timetable for the project. Generally, new cabinets take 4 to 6 weeks, and granite countertops take 2 to 3 weeks. You may personally select your granite or marble slabs at one of several local granite yards, and cabinets and flooring in our showroom. We can also bring samples to your home if this is more convenient.
